Law School Application Volume Data Report (Oct. 17, 2022)

Law School Application Volume Data Report (Oct. 17, 2022)Spivey Consulting Group

As of October 16, 2022, current-cycle law school applicants are down 11.7% relative to the number of applicants who had applied by this date last cycle. The number of applications is down 16.2% vs. last year, which means that not only are there fewer applicants so far this cycle, but each individual applicant is submitting fewer applications on average.

Keep in mind, as we also disclaimed in last week's data update blog, that there is a mountain of anecdotal evidence that there was a huge number of reapplicants last year, i.e. applicants who had already applied in a previous cycle but were trying again. Since reapplicants tend to apply early, this is likely skewing the data to some extent—we would expect the numbers above to moderate somewhat as we move through the cycle. The numbers above have already come down from last week, when applicants were -13.6% and applications were -19.7%.

More data:

  • At this time last cycle, 17% of applications had been submitted
  • Applicants are -11.7% vs. last cycle

  • 61 schools are seeing an increase in their applications so far
  • 135 schools are seeing a decrease
  • 2 school no change
